"I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee." Hebrews 13:6

God created us to be in relationship with others. People long for friendships, love, and affirmation that comes from being with others who care about you. However, when we lose a loved one that dies, or lose a friend that moves away, or lose a close relationship that falls apart, we feel lonely. During these times, we must turn to God for comfort, strength and peace because He is ultimate relationship we need above all others.
When Jesus was about to leave His disciples and go to heaven, He spoke to them and reminded them that He was sending them the Holy Spirit to abide with them and to remain with them forever. The Spirit of God will fill your heart, give you strength and empower you when you turn to God in prayer and praise Him with your whole heart.
However, we also need the fellowship of others in our lives. The word for “fellowship” in the New Testament carries the idea of “sharing something in common.” For a believer, we share a relationship with Christ that unites us together as one spiritual family. We are the family of God and have a responsibility to encourage one another and to help one another.
1John 1
3 that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ.
4 And these things we write to you that your joy may be full.
5 This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.
6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.
7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.
John tells us about a fellowship that we can and should have with one another because we believe in Jesus Christ. In the context of talking about this, John also tells us that the reason he writes about this is so that “your joy may be full.” When we live for God and walk like we should, we can enjoy the fellowship that God provides with other believers who will encourage us and bless us.
You need to become involved in a local church where you commit to regular worship, fellowship, bible study, ministry and prayer. In doing so, you will develop close relationships and friendships with other believers in that church that God has called you to be a part of. It is in that church that you will grow spiritually and learn to serve God in ministry gifts that He gives you. No church is perfect, but God is preparing us for the day that Christ will return for the church. Until then, we must learn to walk in love, to forbear with one another, forgive one another and work together to build God’s Kingdom.
If you are having trouble making and keeping good friends, then maybe you need to pray and ask God to help change whatever attitudes, habits, or personal issues that hinder you from friendships with others.
For the lonely individuals who are single and looking for someone to become their partner in life, God promises to lead you if you follow His guidance. Seek relationships with other believers who also love God and are living for Him. Do not become yoked with an unbeliever, as this will bring about much trouble and turmoil in your life and affect you spiritually in ways that will be very difficult to handle.
If you need prayer or would like someone to talk to, please contact us and someone from our church will reach out to you and pray with you for God’s peace and strength.
